March 16, 2006: George Malleck [B/D Co (FO), 1st BN, 506th, 1969-1970] awards
SGT Phillip Schladweiler a Purple Heart medal in a ceremony held in the
Command Conference Room at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, in
recognition of injuries he sustained while serving with B Company, 1st Battalion,
506th in Iraq.

SGT Schladweiler had met George several weeks previous when George had visited
WRAMC, and it was then that he discovered that George had been in B Co, 1st BN,
506th 35 years ago in Vietnam.

When SGT Schladweiler was informed that he was to be presented a Purple Heart
and that General Richard Cody (Army Chief of Staff and former Commander of
the 101st Division) could be available to present the medal, SGT Schladweiler
elected to have it presented by George. During subsequent conversations, they
discovered that they had both been Artillery Forward Observers with B/1-506th.
