Currahee Packages Project 2006

This was a project to send packages to all 30 companies/troops/batteries of
the entire 506th Regimental Combat Team while they were deployed to Iraq.

Five packages per week were shipped, which means that each of the 30
companies/troops/batteries in the 506th RCT received about 1 package
every 6 weeks from the Association.

On January 17, 2006, Ron Helwig (B Co, 1st ABG, 1960-1962), 506th Association
Quartermaster and Currahee Packages Project Committee member, mailed
out the first Currahee Package to HHC, 1st BN, 506th RCT. The package
was filled with more than 24 pounds of items.

In February 2006, Ron's hometown newspaper, the Press and Journal
(Middletown, PA), published an article about the Currahee Packages Project.

Each of the packages in this first series of mailings contained:

24 packages Orville Redenbacher's Popping Corn
12 packs Wrigley's Chewing Gum
35 bags Martins Mixed Chips
36 Austin Cookies and Crackers Variety Packs
20 pieces strawberry Swizzles
Miscellaneous Candy

The first series of mailings were completed on February 20, 2006, and each of the
packages in the second series contained:
