Vietnam (1967-1972)

During the Vietnam era, the full Regiment of three Battalions existed, however, under the Brigade
system in use by the Army, the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the 506th Infantry were in the 3rd Brigade
of the 101st Airborne Division, and the 3rd Battalion was in the 1st Brigade (and later in the 2nd
Brigade) of the 101st Airborne Division. Thus, there was no true Regimental Commander, only a
Battalion Commander for each of the three 506th Infantry battalions:

1st Battalion Commanders
2nd Battalion Commanders
3rd Battalion Commanders

Post-Vietnam (1972-2004)
During the post-Vietnam era, only the 1st Battalion was activated: 1972-1974 (Airmobile)
and 1974-1984 (Air Assault) at Fort Campbell, KY, as part of the 101st Airborne Division;
1987-2004 as part of the 2nd Infantry Division in the Republic of Korea.

Task Force Currahee
2nd BCT, 2nd Infantry Division
Habbaniyah, Iraq
August 2004 - July 2005
During the summer of 2004, the 1st Battalion of the 506th deployed to Iraq,
and was reinforced with attached Engineer, Armor, and Air Defense Artillery
Companies, along with Marine and Air Force personnel. The name Task
Force Currahee was adopted, and the unit was led by a full Colonel.
