506th PIR Position

Near Heteren en Randwijk (about 9 miles southwest of Arnhem), paratroopers of the 506th PIR
mount guard on a ridge overlooking an open space occupied by the Germans. This dike was to the
Germans' back, and the Currahee foxhole positions were located below the ridge. German attempts
to overrun positions such as these at night were halted by hand-grenade-tossing paratroopers.

Two Currahees from Fox Company (CPL Manning G. Haney and PFC Orel H. Lev), both
recipients of the
Distinguished Service Cross) were killed on October 8, 1944 at Randwijk.
